"Shrek the Musical" a Positive Experience for New Performers

The First Stage Theatre Company closed out its run of "Shrek: The Musical" on Sunday afternoon, capping off a new experience for many of the children taking the stage at Huntington High School, as well for director Zach Davis.

The musical was a co-production between the longtime Huntington-based community troupe and the Developmental Therapy Center in Huntington. Of the 65 cast members, 15 were children between 6 to 19 years old with developmental disabilities. Most were in their first show ever, but played their parts solidly alongside seasoned First Stage performers.

It was an added twist to the existing pressures of orchestrating a show, Davis said of discovering and scouting the ability of these newcomers.

"Directing a show is stressful enough, and this added a whole new layer you're not used to," Davis said. "It's been a great experience, but it's really got my thinker going."

Based on the Broadway musical production of the wildly popular 2001 animated film, "Shrek: The Musical" follows the storyline of the original Shrek film, but with additional backstory regarding how the titular ogre came to live in his beloved swamp.

On Stage This Weekend: "Shrek the Musical"

   It's been a lot of fun to watch the show Shrek the Musical come together.

   Leslie Comer-Porter, who volunteers for both the Developmental Therapy Center and First Stage Theatre, suggested the two groups join forces and produce a show that could include children with special needs, in addition to the usual cast of young actors.

   (I'm also on the board of First Stage, I should mention.)

   We all knew Shrek would be a fun show, with lots of parts for kids of all ages, so we held auditions months ago, and the cast and directors have been working hard since then to bring the show to life.

   There were challenges along the way - it's not always easy to find a giant dragon on short notice, for instance, but they found an awesome pink dragon for Shrek, Donkey and Princess Fiona to encounter!

    Now, all that work pays off as the show takes the stage this weekend (and only this weekend) for four great shows at Huntington High School. 

   We're all proud of what this talented group of young actors has accomplished, and we hope you'll get a chance to see the show and cheer these kids on!

The live stage show, Shrek the Musical, which is based on the beloved Dreamworks animated film, will be presented on May 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. and May 5 and 6 at 2:30 p.m. at the Huntington High School Auditorium at 1 Highlander Way. 

   The hit musical based on Shrek ran on Broadway and has toured the world. It follows the story of an Ogre who finds himself, against his will and with the help of a talking donkey, getting involved in saving Princess Fiona (who’s hiding a secret), facing a dragon and trying to save his storybook friends from an ambitious king.   

  

   The show is a co-production with First Stage Theatre Company and the Developmental Therapy Center in Huntington, and the cast includes children with special needs as performers. The Center is dedicated to providing quality occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language therapy and special instruction services to those with special needs in the Tri-State area, regardless of the patient’s disability or ability to pay for the services.

   The show’s directing team includes Director Zach Davis, Music Director Mark Smith, Choreographer Melissa Marcum, Costume Designer Tish Maynard and producers Debbie Jackson and Leslie Comer-Porter. 

   Shrek the Musical is the third and final show in the 28^th season for Huntington’s children’s theatre.  

   The mission of First Stage Theatre Company is to provide opportunities for children to develop social and communication skills by participating in the performing arts and to promote fine arts education through the presentation of theatrical productions to children and families in our community.

Interview with Marin from "Shrek the Musical"

   Friday is the first public performance for Shrek the Musical, and we’ve been running interviews with members of the cast!

   Today let’s hear from Marin Brown, who plays the part of a fairy tale creature who’s known for running fast! 

Q: Tell us about the cast of “Shrek.” 

Marin: Honestly this has been one of the best casts I’ve ever worked with. It’s full of people who have done 10 million shows and for some this is their first. So, there’s someone with the same experience as everyone and it’s been amazing working with all of these awesome and talented individuals. 

Q: What part do you play?

Marin: I play Gingy. I have loved playing this character because of how weird and funny he actually is. It’s definitely a change from watching Gingy in the movie and actually acting and portraying the character on a stage. It’s been such a great experience! 

Q: If a kid is thinking about audition for a show, what advice would you give? 

Marin: I would tell them to go for it! It’s so much fun and you get to meet so many wonderful people! The energy in the reversal space and especially in the actual theatre is something beyond words and I can’t imagine if I had never auditioned for my first show.

Interview with Nikki from "Shrek the Musical"

   In a few more days, Shrek the Musical will take the stage at Huntington High School, and we’ve been talking to the cast about the show.

   Up next, let’s hear from Nikki Riniti, who wears several hats in the show, including Fairy Godmother!

Q: What is Shrek the Musical all about?

Nikki: “Shrek” is all about accepting everyone for who they are and realizing our quirks are what makes us special and ourselves! It shows that you have to stay true to yourself and love yourself no matter who tries to bring you down. 

Q: What character do you play?

Nikki: I play Fairy Godmother and a few other ensemble roles! I love playing Fairy Godmother because she remains so optimistic and fierce throughout every hardship her and the other characters endure. 

Q: What’s your favorite song in the show? 

Nikki: My favorite song/scene would have to be “Freak Flag.” It’s one of the most fun and flamboyant scenes in the show that truly expresses the theme of self-acceptance for all the fairytale creatures!

Q: Tell us about the cast - are you all having fun working together?

Nikki: This cast is an incredible group of talented, ambitious kids. We all have so much fun hanging out with each other and watching this show grow. I’ve made so many new friends that I love so much (shoutout to Elyse, Nick, Shannon, Taylor, Sammi, and Holly). 

Q: If a kid out there is thinking about auditioning for a future show, what would you tell them?

Nikki: I used to be afraid to even talk to people as a kid. Though I’m still shy, I’ve come out of my shell a lot because of theatre. Something that helped me with auditioning, which has always been the scariest process for me, is realizing that the people in the room with you want to see you succeed and do your best! They are rooting for you! The people at First Stage welcome you with open arms and would definitely love to see you at the next auditions! 

Q: If someone is thinking about going to “Shrek,” would you recommend it?

Nikki: I would totally recommend coming to see “Shrek”. It is such a hilarious and fun show that will leave you feeling free to be yourself. All the kids in the show are so talented and it is amazing to see what they have accomplished. With tons of references to the movie, “Shrek” will make you laugh, cry, smile and everything in between!

   Coming up in May - the season of Shrek begins; some classic shows stage a welcome return; and the newest group in town takes the stage for the first time.

Interview with Emma from "Shrek the Musical"

   We’re just a few days away from the first public performance of Shrek the Musical, so let's meet another member of the cast!

   Emma Maynard is a young veteran of local theatre, and in Shrek she plays the part of a fairy tale character who has trouble with her nose!

Q: What is Shrek the Musical all about?

Emma: The musical Shrek is a show about accepting yourself and each other's differences, because we're all different in our own ways!

Q: What character do you play?

Emma: I play Pinocchio the Puppet in the show. I love my part because Pinocchio learns that being a wooden boy isn't all that bad, and that being different isn't something to be ashamed of.

Q: What’s your favorite song in the show? 

Emma: My favorite song is "Freak Flag." I love how it says that what makes us special makes us strong, and that is true!

Q: Tell us about the cast - are you all having fun working together?

Emma: We have an amazing cast! Everyone is so friendly with each other, and works hard to put on a good show for everybody. 

Q: If a kid out there is thinking about auditioning for a future show, what would you tell them?

Emma: I would say go for it! First Stage is a great company for kids who want to be part of a great cast and make new friends. 

Q: If someone is thinking about going to Shrek, would you recommend it?

Emma: Shrek is a great show to see with your family. It has important morals in a super funny, foot-tapping show!

Interview with Holly from "Shrek the Musical"

   The summer of Shrek is upon us, with at least four different theatre companies tackling the story of the animated green ogre!

   First Stage Theatre and Developmental Therapy Center  is presenting the musical next weekend, so let's meet the cast! Here's the first of a series of interviews with the cast, starting with the lovely and talented Holly Price:

Q: What is Shrek the Musical all about?

Holly: Shrek the Musical is a story about a big green ogre who, after being tormented and feared by “normal” people his whole life, decides to live by himself in a nasty swamp. This plan is wrecked when one day, out of the blue, a group of well known fairy tale creatures (Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Fairy Godmother, etc.) show up and inform Shrek that the evil Lord Farquaad has banished them from the kingdom of Duloc and they have been forced to live in his swamp! Shrek tells them that he will talk to Lord Farquaad and get them to go back to Duloc. This show follows Shrek as tries to get his swamp back, fights a dragon, makes his first friend, finds true love and learns that the world might not be so bad after all.

Q: What character do you play? 

Holly: I play the Sugar Plum Fairy. Sugar Plum gets dumped in the swamp along with the rest of her fairy tale pals, and has to find a way to fight back against Lord Farquaad’s unfair orders. My favorite part of playing this part (besides her fabulous costume, of course) is that she is the one who first tells Pinocchio and the other fairy tale characters that it’s okay to “let your freak flag fly.” I hope that is the message that everyone can take from this show, that being different is amazing, and we should never feel ashamed of who we are.  

Q: What’s your favorite song in the show?

Holly: My favorite part of the whole show is the song “Freak Flag.” This song captures everything that Shrek the Musical is about. Especially the line: “What makes us special, makes us strong.” Which is something that not only have all of our characters learned throughout the show, but our cast has too! This song is has a wonderful message and it’s so energetic and fun! I hope everyone in the audience feels as excited as we do when we perform it and want to dance along in their seats with us! 

Q: Tell us about the cast.

Holly:  This cast is amazing! Everyone involved in the show has been nothing but loving and supportive. I’m one of the older kids at First Stage, so I have been in a lot of shows with many different casts and we always have a great time.

Q: If a kid out there is thinking about auditioning for a future show, what would you tell them?

Holly:  I would tell them to go for it and don’t be afraid! I know auditions can be scary, especially if you’ve never been to one before, but I have had the best experience with First Stage for the past four years. Everyone here is incredibly kind and we have so much fun together. Please come join us! 

Q: If someone is thinking about going to “Shrek,” would you recommend it?

Holly: I think everyone should come see Shrek, whether you’re 5 or 105, there’s going to be something here for you to enjoy! Shrek the Musical has sweet and touching scenes, hilarious jokes, and amazing music. No matter what you like, this show will have it!

AUDITIONS FOR: “Norman Rockwell’s An American Love Story” 

    The Contemporary Youth Arts Company will hold auditions for the Scarpelli-Kehde musical Norman Rockwell’s “An American Love Story” beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 29 at the Contemporary Youth Arts Company Theater, 2nd level [beside Buckle], at the Charleston Town Center. Roles include young couples aged 8-12, 14-16, 18-20 plus several solo roles for actors/singers playing age 40 and above as well as a large chorus. A short prepared musical selection is recommended. Show dates are June 14-23. "Norman Rockwell’s An American Love Story" is the fictional account of two of the Norman Rockwell’s favorite models as they find each other, fall in love and survive the trials of wartime separation.

AUDITIONS FOR: “Guys and Dolls JR.” 

   Alban Arts and Conference Center will hold auditions on May 19 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and May 20 from 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. The musical will be directed by Adam Bryan. This a Junior production so they will only be casting actors ages 8 - 18. There are 13 main roles with a large ensemble. Those auditioning will be required to sing a short song selection of no more than 60 seconds. Also a short monologue is encouraged but if one is not prepared audition sides will be provided. There will also be a short choreography audition where a short dance number will be taught and performed. - Shrek the Musical - First Stage Theatre presents the musical based on the animated film on May 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m., May 5 and 6 at 2:30 p.m. at Huntington High School’s auditorium at 1 Highlander Way. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for senior citizens and kids under 12. 

- Alchemy Cabaret - Alchemy Theatre Troupe's very first performances is a cabaret to introduce their troupe to the community. Enjoy an evening of American songbook and musical theatre standards. This kick-off event has limited seating - only 75 per night! It'll be presented May 18 and 19 at 8 p.,m. at Huntington’s Union Pub and Grill! Tickets are $25 each. There will be a cash bar.

AUDITIONS FOR: Disney’s High School Musical - Children’s Theatre of Charleston has extended auditions for male roles. They’ll be held on Thursday, April 19 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the the Children's Theatre Rehearsal space at 1120 Kanawha Blvd. E., Charleston. Performances: June 28-July 1, 2018. All performances at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences. Please prepare a musical selection for your audition. Auditions are open to those freshman in High School - adult. AUDITIONS FOR: Accidental Death of an Anarchist - Kanawha Players Theatre will hold auditions on Monday and Tuesday, April 23 and 24 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Kanawha Players Theatre at 115 Spring Street in Charleston. SHOW DATES: June 22 - 30 at the Labelle Theatre in South Charleston.
