After months of rumors flying around, a Herald-Dispatch story by Dave Lavender confirms that Huntington has a new theatre group starting up to take the place of the recently-closed Huntington Outdoor Theatre company.
You can read the full article right here - and here's an excerpt from the story:
Get Tommy and Mary Smirl in a room with long-time theater friend Clint McElroy and joy continuously erupts when they talk of summer theater shows past.
The trio (and Clint's late wife Leslie) who have long been part of the adult backbone of First Stage, the children's theater in Huntington, have also spent countless summers with their own children performing at Huntington Outdoor Theatre shows at Ritter Park.
So when H.O.T. founder and veteran award-winning Huntington High School teacher Helen Freeman announced in 2013 that she was actually going to lay claim to her own summer, and was shutting down the summer theater troupe after 20 years, the trio knew they had to act to keep summer theater alive.Partnering with the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District, the three have formed H.A.R.T., or Huntington Area Regional Theatre.
What's coming to Ritter in 2014
H.A.R.T. will be producing two shows for the summer of 2014 and have plans for more shows sprinkled throughout the year at the Ritter Park Amphitheater. Those shows will be announced at a Monday press conference.
