On Stage This Weekend: "Once On This Island JR"

    Here's a great show to check out - a summer theater camp performance of Once On This Island Junior!

   Performances will be Friday at 10 a. m. and Friday at 7 p.m., with the final performance Saturday at 7 p.m. 

   Performances are at St. Peter's Episcopal Church at 2248 Adams Avenue in Huntington. Tickets are just $5 each.

   The group has learned the entire show plus they made the costumes, sets and props. 

   (I hear you might even get a cookie if you see the show!) 

Auditions for "Alice in Wonderland"

    First Stage Theatre Company in Huntington has announced auditions for its first show this fall: Alice In Wonderland.

  

   Auditions will be held on Sunday, Aug. 12 from 2 to 5 p.m. It's open to kids starting in 2nd Grade to High School Seniors.

   They'll be held at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church at 5747 East Pea Ridge Road in Huntington.

   The performances will be Sept. 27-30.

   Here's a description of the show: "Follow that rabbit to a delightful, entertaining world of childhood fantasies. Alice journeys into a world of talking animals, comic royalty and races where the contestants run in circles! There's also the Mad Hatter’s frantic tea party, the watch-carrying White Rabbit and talking flowers. Along the way Alice must deal with a sneezing duchess and a baby that turns into a pig! The finale has Alice watching a trial, but she suddenly finds herself the accused! The play gives a modern view to an old classic, where nonsense makes quite good sense."

“Disney’s The Little Mermaid” - The Charleston Light Opera Guild and the Clay Center present Disney's The Little Mermaid in the Maier Performance Hall at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences on Aug. 3, 4, 10, and 11, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. with matinees on Aug. 5 and 12 at 2 p.m.

“Legally Blonde the Musical” - Paramount Players present the show at the Paramount Theatre in Ashland, Ky., on Aug. 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 4 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $18 for students, $25 for adults.

“Of Devils and Men” is a live stage play written and directed by Lawrence Burgess. The death penalty has just been passed into law. Twelve jurors, one is the devil. The end has come. Performances will be at the Capitol Theatre in Charleston on Oct. 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28 and 31.

closely follows the source material of the novel. Bram Stoker's suspenseful story is based on the classic legend of the Transylvanian vampire. Paramount Players - “Living Truthfully, the Practice Behind the Art.” Art takes practice, and this class is designed to help students of all levels fine tune the art of acting. The class will have a heavy focus on acting schools of thought, various principles, character development, and exercises to hone acting to a sharper edge. Over the 8 week course students will learn how to connect with other actors on stage for a deeper and truer since of the character and story, as well as how to develop a sense for organic and natural acting. Being neither a beginner or advanced class, the goal will be to provide a safe environment to reach out and grasp new levels for all students. Come. Be relaxed. Learn along the way.

Fridays - July 27, August 10, 17 from 6 to 8 p.m.

This class is offered free of charge.

Alban Arts and Conference Center - Introduction to Playwriting with John Barton. This course will focus on teaching skills necessary to write a play: crafting a character, writing believable dialogue, creating conflict, and building a scene. There will be weekly assignments, in-class exercises, and some online discussion and support. Students will do script study, complete several writing exercises, and critique dialogue and scenes before writing their own original 10-minute play. Select plays will be read or performed at the end of the course. No experience necessary. Recommended ages 12 and up (Middle School / High School). Mondays 2 to 4 p.m. at the Alban through August 13. A Meeting of (Historical) Minds

  Fans of theatre - and especially fans of theatre history - will enjoy this article from Playbill, as it brings together two theatre giants - Lin-Manuel Miranda, who created and starred in the hit Broadway musical Hamilton, and William Daniels, who starred in the hit Broadway musical and film 1776, which focused on the creation of the Declaration of Independence - and the United States.

   There are four shows taking local stages this weekend - here's the rundown:

- Shrek the Musical” - HART in the Park presents the musical based on the animated film at the Ritter Park Amphitheatre on July 5, 6, 7 and 8. Gates open at 7 p.m., “Disney’s Lion King Kids” begins at 7:30 p.m., “Shrek” beings at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for children and senior citizens, groups of 10 or more are $10 each.

- “Footloose the Musical” - Jenny Wiley Theatre presents the show based on the film on July 5, 6 and 7 at 8:15 p.m. at the Jenny Wiley Theatre at 121 Theatre Court in Prestonsburg, Ky. 

- “Jungle Book KIDS” - Southern Coalition for the Arts presents the musical at the Logan High School Little Theater on July 5 at 5 p.m., July 6 at 2, 4 and 6 p.m., and on July 7 at 2, 4 and 6 p.m. KIDS GET IN FREE! Adult tickets are $5! After the show, kids will be able to have a meet and greet with their favorite Jungle Book characters.

- “Signing Off” - a live stage play by Lawrence Burgess, is set in a dystopian 2020 West Virginia. Combining thriller, dark comedy, and political satire, “Signing Off” was recognized by West Virginia Writers, Inc. (“Twelve,” Screenplay Category, 2011). Mature discretion advised. It will be presented at The Capitol Theater at Resurrection Church at 123 Summers Street in Charleston on Friday, July 6 at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 7 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday, July 8 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. All tickets: $10.    So go out and see a show!

WV Shakespeare Festival

   Saturday evening's performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream - the first production from the new Alchemy Theatre Troupe - wrapped up the first-ever West Virginia Shakespeare Festival (WV Shakes), and it was a resounding success!

   The comedy was presented at Barboursville Park and it was a tremendous production, with an incredibly talented cast presenting the story of two couples in love (often with the wrong person), some conniving fairies who use magic spells to prank their loved ones, and a group of rough-hewn workers who manage to stage the most inept stage-show-within-a-show ever - but that production is also incredibly funny.

   Presented in the lovely (and vastly under-used) Barboursville Park Amphitheater, the show was perfectly timed to wrap up just as the sun was setting, giving the proceedings a magical feel - and the mountains evoked the "woods outside of Athens" setting.

   Hopefully this is just the first of many future productions!

- “Guys and Dolls” - The Marietta College Theatre Department present the musical comedy on July 1 at 2:30 p.m. at the People’s Bank Theatre at 222 Putnam Street in Marietta, Ohio. Tickets are $30, $25 and $20.

- “Footloose the Musical” - Jenny Wiley Theatre presents the show based on the film on July 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 at 8:15 p.m. at the Jenny Wiley Theatre at 121 Theatre Court in Prestonsburg, Ky. 

- “Oedipus: An Appalachian Tragedy” - The Alban Arts Center presents the world premiere of the play by A.E. Gill. It adapts the Greek tragedy and examines our responsibilities as citizens, the responsibility of ur elected officials and how our ethics can effect the prosperity of a community. The play will be presented July 1 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for students and senior citizens and $15 for adults.

- “Jungle Book KIDS” - Southern Coalition for the Arts presents the musical at the Logan High School Little Theater on July 5 at 5 p.m., July 6 at 2, 4 and 6 p.m., and on July 7 at 2, 4 and 6 p.m. KIDS GET IN FREE! Adult tickets are $5! After the show, kids will be able to have a meet and greet with their favorite Jungle Book characters.

- “Signing Off” - a live stage play by Lawrence Burgess, is set in a dystopian 2020 West Virginia. Combining thriller, dark comedy, and political satire, “Signing Off” was recognized by West Virginia Writers, Inc. (“Twelve,” Screenplay Category, 2011). Mature discretion advised. It will be presented at The Capitol Theater at Resurrection Church at 123 Summers Street in Charleston on Friday, July 6 at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 7 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday, July 8 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. All tickets: $10. - “Peter Pan, Jr.” - Jenny Wiley Theatre will present the Junior version of the show based on the beloved book on July 19, 20 and 21 at 6 p.m. and July 21 at 2 p.m. at the Jenny Wiley Mainstage in Pikeville, Ky. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children and senior citizens.

- “Hairspray” - Jenny Wiley Theatre presents the beloved musical about Tracy Turnblad’s dreams of fame, and how she uses her newfound star power to promote equal rights. The show will be presented at the Amphitheatre in Prestonsburg, Ky., on July 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 31, Aug. 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 109 and 11 at 8:15 p.m.

- “Disney’s Aladdin, Jr.” - The Aracoma Story presents the Junior version of the musical on July 26, 27, 28, 29, Aug. 2, 3, 4 and 5 at 8:30 p.m. at Chief Logan State Park in Logan, WV.
