First Stage Theatre Will Present “Newsies" March 8, 9, 10

The hit musical “Disney’s Newsies” will be presented by First Stage Theatre Company at the Huntington High School auditorium at 1 Highlander Way in Huntington on Friday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 9 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 10 at 2:30 p.m.

The musical is based on the beloved Disney film and the Broadway musical. Set in New York City in 1899, “Newsies” is the story of a band of young paperboys and girls struggling to make a living selling newspapers on the street. When titans of publishing raise the prices at the newsboys’ expense, Newsies from across the city rally to strike and fight for what's right! Inspired by a true story, the musical features classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe.”

The production features 50 student performers from the Tri-State area (and a few veteran performers, too), bringing to life the high-energy story of the singing and dancing Newsies. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children age 12 and under and are available at the door and may be reserved by calling 304-416-5437.

A special daytime performance will also be presented for area schools on March 7 - for more information, call 304-416-5437.

The musical is sponsored by the Herald-Dispatch and H-D Media.

The directing team includes: Director Chuck Minsker, Music Director Mark Smith, Choreographer Sarah Navy, Assistant Choreographer Cindy Westbrook, Assistant Director Daniel Ferguson, Producer Loretta Hayes and Set Construction Directors Jack Welch and Jeff Maynard.

“Newsies” is the final show in the 29th season for Huntington’s long-running children’s theatre. Based in Huntington, W.Va., the First Stage Theatre Company is a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to providing an educational, developmental experience for young people through the performing arts.
