Interview with Jonathan Maynard from "Picasso at the Lapin Agile"

Alchemy Theatre is offering two more chances to catch their latest play, the very funny Picasso at the Lapin Agile, and it all happens this Friday and Saturday evening!

We have one more interview with a member of the cast to share - let’s hear from the talented and ruggedly handsome Jonathan Maynard:

Q: What’s Picasso at the Lapin Agile about?

Jonathan: I think it’s about 60 pages. However, the STORY is a fictionalized account of the possible yet improbable meeting of Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso at a Parian night club and what their conversation might look like. Thanks to Steve Martin, this account is completely absurd and highly amusing. For those that aren’t in the know, Lapin Agile is French for agile rabbit.

Q: What character do you play?

Jonathan: I play Freddy, owner of the titular watering hole. The character is in part based on the real owner of the club at the time - Feredric Gerard.

Q: Why did you want to be part of this play?

Jonathan: Theatre is a second home to me. Unfortunately, I don’t sing well. So when a straight drama or comedy comes along, I usually jump at the chance. Add to that the ability to once again perform with many longtime friends, the return of Mike Murdock (with whom I have a great directorial appreciation), and an utterly brilliant piece of theatre, it ticks off all the checkboxes for a project I want to be a part of.

Q: Tell us about the cast.

Jonathan: Alchemy Theatre has acquired the services of many of the great local actors over their short life span and this time is no different.

Q: Why would you recommend this play to our readers?

Jonathan: This is the kind of show that doesn’t come around very often in the Tri-State Area. It will both amuse and bemuse you. There will always be another time to see the blockbuster of the week. But there aren’t many opportunities to see live people giving it their all to make you laugh, think, and general just have a good time. They’ll leave the theatre smiling. And it will only cost $15 if you want to prove me wrong.

   Thanks, Jonathan!

Picasso at the Lapin Agile is being presented by Alchemy Theatre Troupe on Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13, at 8 p.m. at the Kindred Communications Building at 555 5th Avenue in Huntington. Tickets are general admission and are $15 each.
