The Tony Award Winners!

I thought the Tonys put on a great show last night, with Neil Patrick Harris doing a great job hosting (his opening and closing numbers were terrific, and the number with Hugh Jackman was very funny), the musical numbers were mostly terrific, and it was worth watching just for Mark Rylance's very funny acceptance speech, which had nothing to do with the award at all.

Most importantly, we have the winners to announce in our annual "You Pick the Tonys Winners" competition!

Running away with first place this year was Mel Larch, with an amazing 20 correct answers! Mel has bragging rights for a second year in a row!

Placing second with a solid effort was Zach Davis, with a dozen correct picks! Tied for third place is Stephen Vance and Mark Near with six correct picks. Better luck next time, guys!

As always, thanks for playing along - I'll try to get this thing up and running with more warning next time around!

Thanks to Zac, Stephen, & Mark for playing along. It's no fun to do awards show predictions all by one's lonesome. If I'd just stuck with my heart for Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical (Nikki M James/The Book of Mormon), I'd have walked away with 21. As Elders Price & Cunningham would say, dang it!

Fun show, but Norbert Leo Butz for Best Actor in a Musical? Really, Tony voters? I've watched that clip from "Catch Me If You Can" at least twice & just can't see what makes his performance more deserving than either of TBOM's actors who were nominated.

And while I certainly understand the whole standards & practices issue? I just feel like CBS wussed out. "The Mother With The Hat"....come on, folks. We're all big people, we KNOW what the full title of that show is. I don't see why they couldn't have used the asterisks, like I've seen on the show's Playbill.

Stepping down from my soapbox now & going to enjoy my crown for another year. Hope you're feeling better, Chuck.

Doing much better now, Mel, thanks!

I agree with all your comments - it's always funny when titles get censored (although I can understand with "The Mother******") - I once heard an ad for the movie "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" as "The Best Little House in Texas."

Congrats again on an awesome win, Mel!

I'm disappointed we didn't get to see your Tony picks!

Going back to the censorship thing, isn't it interesting that the most bullets were probably sweated over "TMWTH" and "The Book of Mormon", Brooke Shields triggered the seven second delay?

We should have a post on here talking about what we liked/didn't like & comments on our choices & those of the Tony voters, too. Might be fun!

Oh and I'll go out on a limb for 2013--Steppenwolf's production of "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?" will walk away with some Tonys. We saw the show back in March during its run at Arena Stage in Washington, DC. Excellent direction and a superb cast, including Pulitzer Prize winner ("August: Osage County") Tracy Letts as George and Amy Morton as Martha. Great production all around!

Yeah, I hated to miss out on the fun (although it would have been a wipeout for me - I didn't see the "Book of Mormon" avalanche coming). I was going to make my picks Saturday night, but I was deathly ill instead. Whatever I had, I don't recommend it!

I'll go out on a limb and predict that next year, "Spider-Man" will get some kind of an award - best scenic design, maybe. How's that for daring?

Wow 2nd really...shocker I moved up two places this year....I'm so getting better...I will try harder next year....Spiderman will win for most accident prone show...hmm sounds like I should be in it LOL.

Mel Larch said...

We should come up with our own special awards just for Spider-Man.
Something like Show Most Likely to Bankrupt the State of New York's Workers Compensation Office.

I liked Bono's comment on the Tonys, that he "used to be known for being in a rock band."
