On Stage This Weekend: "Our Town"

As best as I can remember, Our Town was my first staged play (as a member of the audience). I was amazed, seeing my friends on stage at Hayes Junior High, putting on this amazing, thoughtful and moving performance.

That was the last time I saw the show (I'd rather not think about how long ago that was), so I'm really looking forward to seeing what ARTS does with the show!

It's the story of an American family, told in a unique format, using a minimal set. The focus is on the story and the characters.

It's taking the stage in Huntington this weekend - and if you want to take advantage of the dinner offered, you'd better get your reservation in - Saturday's dinner is sold out!

Here's everything you need to know about the play:

   Our Town runs January 30, 31, February 1, 6, 7 and 8.

Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m. Sunday Matinees are at 2 p.m.

"Dave Barry's Guide to Guys"

This is an event you don't want to miss - it's an annual dinner and show presented by First United Methodist Church!

It's a combination of terrific food and a great show - I make it a point to be there every year - and this year the show is based around one of America's funniest writers, Dave Barry!

Here's what you need to know:

First Church Dinner Theater 2015

dave barry’s complete guide to guys

Based on the book by Pulitzer Prize winning humorist Dave Barry and adapted for stage by Emily Dye, this year’s production will take a hilarious look at the foibles of guys (not men) down through the centuries. Through a series of skits, we will explore critical questions such as:

- What is a guy?
- Are you a guy?
- How do you have a relationship with a guy?
- How did a guy discover the New World?
- Who invented the whoopee cushion?

(NOTE: No actual guys were harmed in this production)

First Church Dinner Theater has been a winter highlight in Huntington since 1991.  It is an integral part of First United Methodist Church’s Mission program, raising nearly $50,000 for Mission projects through 22 productions. For example, last year’s proceeds helped Ebenezer Outreach Center, the Campus Christian Center, food and clothing for local families in need, Christmas in Nicaragua, and other West Virginia mission projects.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Auditions on Feb. 7

If you'll forgive some self-promotion, First Stage Theatre is getting ready to take on a new challenge - courtesy of a very old play.

For the first time in its 25-year history, the children's theatre is tackling a Shakespeare play - and I get to direct it! Here's the press release announcing the auditions:

----------------

First Stage Theatre Company will hold auditions for the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pea Ridge United Methodist Church at 5747 East Pea Ridge Road in Huntington, W.Va.

Auditions are open to students ages 10 through high school seniors - there are parts available for all ages in that range. Participants can arrive and sign up at any time between 10 and 4. There is no charge to audition or to take part in a First Stage production, and no theatre experience is required.

The comedy by William Shakespeare includes royalty, commoners and hapless entertainers, creatures of magic and love spells gone wrong. It’s one of Shakespeare’s most beloved (and funniest) plays.

Auditioners will also be given a few lines from the script to read - memorization is not required (in other words, they can read from the sheet while auditioning).

The play is being directed by Chuck Minsker, with Assistant Director Robyn Welch and Producer Leslie Comer-Porter.

The play will be presented April 17, 18 and 19, 2015, at the Cabell County Public Library in Huntington. There will also be a special school performance on April 16.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream will wrap up First Stage’s 25th season.

Based in Huntington, W.Va., the First Stage Theatre Company is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing an educational, developmental experience for young people through the performing arts.

For more information, contact Chuck Minsker at 304-736-4366, or visit the First Stage website at: www.firststagetheare.org; on Facebook it’s: https://www.facebook.com/pages/First-Stage-Theatre-Company/151408134941398.

--------------

Let me add how happy I am to be working with my directing team on this play! The team includes Robyn Welch, who grew up on stage with First Stage. She's now a teacher, and has worked as an assistant on several shows, including Disney's Little Mermaid, Jr.

Our producer is the amazing Leslie Comer-Porter, who's worked her magic on several shows with me, including "Little Mermaid" and last fall's Disney's Aladdin, Jr. The producer job is a heck of a challenge, and you need someone as organized, efficient and hard-working as Leslie - she's terrific!

The show's going to be a real challenge, but it's also going to be a lot of fun! I've been a fan of "Midsummer" for decades, and I've been hoping First Stage would tackle it. I can't wait to get started!

On Stage This Weekend: [glug]

There's only one show taking the stage in our area this weekend - but it's a great one, as the Marshall University Theatre Alliance and The Lunar Stratagem present [glug].

The play, written by Matthew Earnest, focuses on grown-up siblings Herbert and Myrtle, who have lost their trail of breadcrumbs and will go to any lengths to find water. They even raid their own dreams for some trace of their father, a noted scientist who disappeared under mysterious circumstances after revealing that the town’s reservoir had been poisoned.

The shows stars Nathan Mohebbi, a Marshall grad who's now a professional actor in Los Angeles, and MU Assistant Professor Nicole Perrone.

[glug] is a new dance-theater work by The Lunar Stratagem, a witty, hallucinatory fairy tale for adults. The premiere of the play coincides with the one-year anniversary of the Elk River spill on Jan. 9, when, due to leaks in storage containers owned by Freedom Industries, a federal state of emergency was declared in nine West Virginia Counties, including the Culloden area of Cabell. The containers contained crude MCHM, a chemical foam used to remove impurities from coal.

The show suns Jan. 8, 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center in the Francis-Booth Experimental Theatre. Tickets are $12 for the public,  Marshall University students admitted with a valid I.D. For more information or to reserve tickets, calls the box office at 304-696-2787.

    Highly recommended!

Magic Makers: The End of an Era

(Magic Makers owners Ken Epperly, left, and Ken Fox, stand among some of the character masks at the store. Photo by Shane Arrington with The Herald-Dispatch.)

I paid a visit to Magic Makers last week.

It's the long-running costume shop that's been part of our community for about 35 years. I've been a customer practically since the start - it began in a small shop in Barboursville, and I rented a costume from them that first year - 1979.

In the years since, I've shot numerous news stories there (from my days with WOWK-TV news and the "Kidsmag" news program) and rented innumerable costumes - most of them through First Stage Theatre Company - heck, I've even worn one of their costumes on stage (in Camelot).

To put it simply, the "two Kens" - Ken Fox and Ken Epperly - have built quite an institution in Huntington, renting thousands of costumes and a vast variety of props. It's a service that theatre groups around the country have come to depend on.

I've been involved with dozens of local shows, and I don't think there's a single show in there that didn't rent costumes or buy props from Magic Makers. Like the other theatre groups locally, I wonder when we're going to do about costumes in the future - there won't be the luxury of running down to the corner to pick up whatever last-minute item we need for a show.

I certainly don't fault them for retiring - everyone's entitled to a break after so many years of hard work - and they're both exceedingly kind and thoughtful, and always a delight to work with. They've been huge supporters of local theatre! But that doesn't make it any easier to see them go.

They're in the middle of their "Going Out of Business" sale, but there's still tons of costumes and props and masks and heaven knows what else on sale. If you haven't been by yet, I urge you to pay a visit, pick up some neat items, and tells the "two Kens" how much you appreciate them.

It's the least we can do for a couple of icons!

On Stage in January

The new year brings a few shows taking the stage in January - here's the rundown:

- Our Town - ARTS presents the classic play by Thornton Wilder at the Renaissance Ballroom Jan. 30, 31, Feb. 6 and 7 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 1 and 8 at 2 p.m.  It tells the story of a fictional American small town in the early 1900s through the everyday lives of its citizens

- [glug] - The Lunar Stratagem presents a world premiere Jan. 8, 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center at Marshall University. Grown-up siblings Herbert and Myrtle (played by Nathan Mohebbi and Nicole Perrone) have lost their trail of breadcrumbs and will go to any lengths to find water. They even raid their own dreams for some trace of their father, a noted scientist who disappeared under mysterious circumstances after revealing that the town’s reservoir had been poisoned. This dance-theater work is a witty, hallucinatory fairy tale for adults. The premiere of [glug] coincides with the one-year anniversary of the Elk River spill on January 9, when, due to leaks in storage containers owned by Freedom Industries, a federal state of emergency was declared in nine West Virginia Counties, including the Culloden area of Cabell.

- Guys and Dolls - Paramount Performing Arts Center presents the touring Broadway production of the beloved musical on Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Can Sister Sarah save Sky’s soul? Find the answers in hit tunes, from “Luck Be a Lady” to “If I Were a Bell” in the rollicking, Tony Award-winning musical, fresh from its Broadway revival.

Looking for Talented Performers!

First Church Dinner Theatre is looking for local talent! Here are the details courtesy of my pal Jerry Morse:

ATTENTION all actors and actresses, would-be or otherwise !

First Church Dinner Theater 2015 will be a series of comedy sketches all drawn from Dave Barry's book "A Complete Guide to Guys." Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13 and 14, 2015.

REHEARSALS ARE STARTING NOW, BUT WE NEED MORE PLAYERS ! We need narrators, male or female, who will not have to memorize. We also need male and female actors, ages young teen on up. They will need to memorize parts for the short individual sketches. PLEASE CONTACT JANE OR JERRY MORSE IMMEDIATELY IF YOU’D LIKE TO PARTICIPATE.
