"Shrek the Musical" Auditions This Weekend

First Stage Theatre Company will hold auditions for Shrek the Musical on Saturday, Jan. 6 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 7 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pea Ridge United Methodist Church at 5747 East Pea Ridge Road in Huntington, W.Va.

Auditions are open to young people, ranging from High School seniors to First Graders. Children with special needs are encouraged to audition. There is no charge to being in a First Stage show. Those auditioning may arrive anytime during the hours listed. They should be prepared to sing 30 seconds from the song of their choice – use a song from a stage musical, if possible. No pop tunes and no acapella singing. An accompanist will be provided, so bring sheet music if you have it, or you may sing to a track. Those auditioning will read some lines from a script that will be provided, and they will be taught a short dance for the audition – so wear clothes and shoes appropriate for dancing.

The show is a co-production with the Developmental Therapy Center in Huntington and First Stage, and will include children with special needs as performers. The Center is dedicated to providing quality occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language therapy and special instruction services to those with special needs in the Tri-State area, regardless of the patient’s disability or ability to pay for the services.

The musical is based on the beloved Dreamworks animated film. It will be presented on May 4, 5 and 6 at the Huntington High School Auditorium at 1 Highlander Way. A special daytime performance for schools will also be offered.

The show’s directing team includes: Director Zach Davis, Music Director Laura Campbell, Choreographers Melissa Marcum and Ashleigh Bannon-Dyer, Costume Designer Tish Maynard and producers Debbie Jackson and Leslie Comer-Porter.

The hit musical based on “Shrek” ran on Broadway and has toured the world. It follows the story of an Ogre who finds himself, against his will and with the help of a talking donkey, getting involved in saving Princess Fiona (who’s hiding a secret), facing a dragon and trying to save his storybook friends from an ambitious king.

“Shrek the Musical” is the third show in the 28th season for Huntington’s long-running children’s theatre.

The mission of First Stage Theatre Company is to provide opportunities for children to develop social and communication skills by participating in the performing arts and to promote fine arts education through the presentation of theatrical productions to children and families in our community.
