Name the Tony Winners

My pal Denise sent in an excellent suggestion - let's post it here so everyone can join in the fun:

She asked:
Would you consider posting predictions of the outcome before next Sunday?
What an excellent suggestion - I wish I'd thought of it!

I'll make my predictions this week (although that might be the kiss of death for any show). Readers, feel free to play along - send in your comments with your predictions. There's no prize, other than the admiration of your peers - and it should be fun to play along when I'm live-blogging the show next Sunday.

The complete list of nominees is right here. So what shows will win?

Denise, since it was your idea it's only fair that you go first! Excellent choices, too!

Best Play - August: Osage County (only because I lived near Osage, WV in law school)

Best Musical - Cry-Baby (when we were in NYC in April, Cry-Baby was all the rage. We'll see if that translates to a Tony)

Best Book of a Musical - Cry-Baby (consistency, if nothing else)

Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre -
Cry-Baby

Best Revival of a Play - Macbeth (I don't bet against the Bard)

Best Revival of a Musical - Gypsy (Patti LuPone will pull this to a few Tonys; Grease was universally panned which means, of course, it probably will win; my second choice would have been Sunday w/ George)

Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play - Patrick Stewart, Macbeth (I would never vote against Captain Picard)

Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play - Kate Fleetwood, Macbeth (don't know any of these, but I like Fleetwood Mac, so that's as good of a reason as any)

Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical - Daniel Evans, Sunday in the Park with George (Tom Wopat is the single most overrated performer in Broadway's history.)

Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical - Patti LuPone, Gypsy (see above)

Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play - Bobby Cannavale, Mauritius (I don't have a clue)

Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play - Rondi Reed, August: Osage County (ditto)

Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical - Christopher Fitzgerald, The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein (he was hysterical as Igor - which had to be daunting following a legend like Mary Feldman in that role)

Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical - Andrea Martin, The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein (absolutely hysterical, and I can't vote against anyone that was in My Big Fat Greek Wedding)

The rest are a guess, at best:

Best Scenic Design of a Play - Macbeth

Best Scenic Design of a Musical -
Young Frankenstein

Best Costume Design of a Play - Boeing-Boeing

Best Costume Design of a Musical -
Sunday in the Park with George

Best Lighting Design of a Play -
The 39 Steps

Best Lighting Design of a Musical Sunday in the Park with George

Best Sound Design of a Play - Rock 'n' Roll

Best Sound Design of a Musical -
Gypsy

Best Direction of a Play -
Anna D. Shapiro, August: Osage County

Best Direction of a Musical -
Sam Buntrock, Sunday in the Park with George

Best Choreography - Rob Ashford, Cry-Baby

Best Orchestrations - Jonathan Tunick, A Catered Affair

Mark, Great choices - and I love the commentary!

Boy, Marka and I hardly overlap at all. This should be interesting.

Denise,

While your choices were born of a love of the theater and an appreciation for the artists, mine are pure conjecture, ripe for ridicule. :o)

My guess is that you'll win, Chuck will be close behind, and the chicken that picks NFL games will beat me by a wide margin.
