The Tonys Take a Toll

Now that the Tony Awards have been handed out, you can expect some of the shows that didn't take home awards to close up shop (and that doesn't include the shows that had already announced their closing dates, such as Rent).

For example, today was the final performance for Cry-Baby. The musical opened on Broadway on April 24. (So much for my "Best Musical" prediction.)

The latest show to throw in the towel is A Catered Affair, which will close on July 27 after 116 regular performances on Broadway.

But the good news is, this means more new shows are on the way, including the recently-announced revival of Pal Joey and Samson Raphaelson's 1934 comedy Accent on Youth, to name just two.

It's the circle of life on Broadway!

After I saw your list of soon to be openings, I wondered what happened to the much-talked-about new musical "A Tale of Two Cities" which, I assume, aspires to be a "Les Mis" type of production.

Thanks to Google, I found out that it ran in Sarasota to work the proverbial bugs out, and is now scheduled to open August 19 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre (currently showing "Curtains") in NYC. In Sarasota, the show starred James Barbour in the Sydney Carton role(who has been on Broadway as the Beast in "Beauty and the Beast" and Edward Fairfax Rochester in "Jane Eyre", plus has had his share of legal problems), but no casting information has been released for the NYC production.

Some on here might recall that Derek Keeling of Winfield (finalist for the role of Danny in "Grease", cast from TV's "You're the One that I Want") was in the original Sarasota cast as Charles Darnay.

Here's the show's website: http://www.ataleof2cities.com/

I really hope its a good show -- I can't imagine a better underlying story.

Thanks for the info, Mark - and I agree, I think "A Tale of Two Cities" could be another hit in the vein of "Les Miz" - and it would be nice to see Keeling in it, too. Here's hoping!
