I've only seen a few of the nominated movies this year (unlike last year, when I tried to see all), but here are my (limited)impressions:

The Hurt Locker was decent, and perhaps even important, but it wasn't a great movie. Almost no plot - certainly limited character development - and I thought it was almost stereotypical in its depiction of both Iraqis and American soldiers.

However, how cool was it to see two alumni from We Are Marshall standing on the podium as the Oscar for Best Picture was accepted?

I very much liked Up in the Air - great story, and (contrary to THL) great character development. I had never heard of co-star Vera Farmiga before, but when the movie was over I felt creeped out by her character. How much more evidence that she's a good actor does one need?

I want to see The Last Station now. Can anything with Christopher Plummer be bad?

Invictus has a terrific story, but the movie just didn't work. I think, perhaps, it was because Hollywood insisted on using big name Americans for box office affect, rather than actual South Africans. I am surprised that the whole country wasn't ticked that foreigners were felt necessary.

Penelope Cruz. 'nuf said. :o)

I only saw two of the nominees this year - "Up" and "Avatar" (and the latter just the day before the Oscars), so as usual, my guesses were just shots in the dark. This time around, they were darned lucky guesses, too!
